Vilhelmina is a municipality in the province of Västerbotten, north of Sweden. With an area of 8120 km², it is the seventh municipality of Sweden in extension but has a population density of 1 inhabitant per square kilometer. The population is divided between 4057 men and 3861 women. The capital, named homonym, has 2000 inhabitants.
In 1804 the commune of Volgsjö was called Vilhelmina, in honor of Queen Federica Dorotea Guillermina.
Like the rest of the northern parts of Sweden, called colloquially Norland, it is scarcely populated due to the rigorous climate. However, it has important natural wealth. The lowest temperature recorded in Sweden was -53º C, thirty kilometers from the capital of the municipality.
